Despite everyone and their dog reaching out to Activision for comment on all these rumors, the publisher is staying tight lipped and refusing to offer any soundbites. These battle royale games are incredibly popular on Xbox One, Playstation 4, PC, and mobile devices and this latest news could bring the popular mode to the Call of Duty franchise. For those who feel some sort of way about the news (such as myself) we still got the Modern Warfare 2 remake to look forward to that will only have the games single-player campaign but no multiplayer mode. A source also said that cooperative modes could be used as a replacement for the lack of a solo campaign.
According to the Polygon sources, the assigned developers for the game, Treyarch were not able to develop the single-player mode in time.
The report was confirmed by other sources gathered by Kotaku, which also claims to have heard - same as Charlie Intel - of a battle royale mode coming as a sort of replacement for the missing story mode.

The genre is now captivating a large portion of the gaming audience and it would only seem natural that Activision wants to hop on this trend before it's exhausted. Hard to say-we'll know officially in about a month-but it does sound like this CoD has a better chance of being more structurally distinct from other games in the series. The game is being developed by Treyarch Studios and will be published by Activision.
