Blankenship's loss spared Republicans from painful decisions about whether to abandon their hopes of unseating Democratic Sen. The former coal executive was convicted of mine safety violations and during his campaign had challenged the GOP brass, including launching racially charged attacks on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's, R-Ky., family.
Blankenship said Trump's Monday morning tweet urging West Virginia voters to reject him in favor of either Morrisey or Jenkins played a role in his loss.
