Luck appeared in a video saying that he's thrilled to have the opportunity to reimagine football, and that fans can expect a fast paced, high-energy, simpler game.
It's a return to professional football for Luck, who played quarterback for the Houston Oilers in the 1980s and worked in various roles with NFL Europe from the early 1990s into the 2000s, including a stint as president of the league.
He will now relocate from Indianapolis to the XFL's headquarters in CT as he prepares for the league's launch in 2020.
McMahon announced the hire Tuesday, four months after unveiling plans to relaunch the XFL, which folded in 2001 after its only season.
"The XFL will be a labor of love as I get to combine my experiences as a player and executive", Luck told ESPN in an email. "His experience as both an athlete and executive will ensure the long-term success of the XFL".

Luck earned his J.D. from the University of Texas at Austin School of Law, graduating cum laude in 1987.
During his time with the NCAA, Luck oversaw the organization's regulatory functions, including eligibility requirements and academic affairs, and the eligibility center.
