Thousands queued on a scorching hot day in Phoenix, Arizona, to pay their respects to the late Senator John McCain, who died last Saturday, as his body lay in state in the desert city.
Friday's events in the Capitol will feature remarks by fellow Republicans Vice President Mike Pence, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan, marking McCain's 35-year career in Congress.
The senator's body will lie in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda on Friday before being transported to Maryland for a private service at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis on Sunday. Family, friends, lawmakers and guests gathered in the vast Rotunda for a memorial service. "I have made mistakes, but I hope my love for America will be weighed favorably against them", he wrote.

The Trump-McCain relationship left little room for that.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Trump was confident he honored McCain appropriately, days after the White House flag was lowered to half-staff, raised to full-staff, then lowered again in what was perhaps the most telling sign of strained relations between the two.
Earlier, the hearse bearing McCain's coffin was greeted outside the statehouse by National Guard troops, military veterans, law enforcement officers and firefighters, all in dress uniform and standing at attention as they saluted.
