Among those could be a microwave oven, a subwoofer, an amplifier, and an "in-car gadget". The company is expected to show them off at an event this month, CNBC goes on to note, according to an internal Amazon document.
If these new devices are launched, it would be Amazon's first foray into the home appliances market, and will place it in direct competition with the likes of Sonos, GE and Garmin who already offer Alexa-enabled products for the home and auto.
Amazon may decide to launch an entirely separate line dedicated to Alexa-equipped home devices, separate from the Echo line. The more in-house products and partnerships Amazon can score for Alexa, the better. Now, it seems Amazon is hoping to take things a step further with a clutch of new devices. An unspecified in-car gadget is also planned. The microwave can make Alexa a key part of the kitchen. Now, just a few years later, consumers have embraced other Alexa-enabled household devices including smart thermostats, TVs, door locks, vacuums, and security cameras.
Amazon is also reported to be working on a secretive home robot.
Each one of these new products could open up fresh revenue streams for Amazon.
Should we expect to see Amazon try to make more home devices smart? Amazon's former director of Alexa Smart Home, Charlie Kindel, meanwhile, joined smart home service provider Control 4 in August. But it looks like the e-commerce firm is planning to expand its hardware portfolio drastically with as many as eight devices if the latest report by CNBC holds some weight.
Alexa previously got visual with the Echo Show.
The CEO of Amazon has already made clear his ambition to make Alexa more widely used, as the company wants customers to be able to use the assistant wherever they are. There are also products such as the Roav Viva from Anker, an Alexa device which plugs into the 12-volt socket and plays music through the car's Bluetooth-enabled speaker system.
