The US attorney general, Jeff Sessions, said he was resigning Wednesday at the request of President Donald Trump in a move that raises questions over the future of a bombshell probe into the president's alleged collusion with Russian Federation.

"Dear Mr President, at your request I am submitting my resignation", Mr Sessions said in his letter.

Sessions was asked to resign by President Trump on Wednesday after the former Alabama senator - an early supporter of the president - saw his relationship with Trump sour.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer says it is "paramount" that the investigation of special counsel Robert Mueller be protected by President Donald Trump's new attorney general.

Jeff Sessions' chief of staff Matthew Whitaker will be replacing him as Acting Attorney General.

Subsequently, it was announced that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein would no longer oversee the Mueller investigation.

Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), expected to be the incoming chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, tweeted, "Americans must have answers immediately as to the reasoning behind @realDonaldTrump removing Jeff Sessions from @TheJusticeDept".

Last month, on Oct 10, The Washington Post reported that Trump had recently spoken with Matthew about replacing Sessions as attorney general.

Through all the rumors over the past few months, we finally got an answer as to who would be Floyd Mayweather's next opponent. Rules for the bout and the weight class will be determined later, Mayweather said at a news conference Monday in Tokyo.

"According to NBC News, Voters Nationwide Disapprove of the so-called Mueller Investigation (46%) more than they Approve (41%)".

"I could fire everybody right now, but I don't want to stop it because politically I don't like stopping it", Mr Trump told a White House news conference.

Trump: President Donald Trump tweeted that Matt Whitaker will take over as acting attorney general.

"I don't have an attorney general".

Trump has always been frustrated with Sessions, one of the president's earliest supporters, for recusing himself from matters related to the Russian Federation investigation in early 2017. Previously he was a conservative legal commentator who was critical of the scope of Mueller's probe.

But it's also true for the conduct of public corruption and other types of investigations.

A Justice Department official said Whitaker would assume authority over Mueller's investigation.

The President was furious when Mr Sessions recused himself from investigations into Russia's possible meddling in USA elections and collusion with the Trump campaign, paving the way for the appointment of Special Counsel Robert Muller.
