The Washington Post reported that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman told senior Trump administration officials that Khashoggi was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood and was risky, although later, in public, the crown prince described the killing as a "terrible mistake".
Saudi Arabia has arrested 18 men on suspicion of killing Mr Khashoggi but denied that Crown Prince Mohammed ordered his death or had any involvement in it.
Saudi officials have for weeks pushed a theory, via anonymous leaks to the media, that Khashoggi's killers rolled the Saudi journalist's body in some kind of carpet or fabric and gave it to a Turkish coconspirator for removal from the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.
The source speaking to CNN didn't clarify the reasons and significance of the prince's return or if he had indeed sought assurances for his safety after spending two and a half months overseas.
After talks with Mojeb earlier this week, Fidan also said the killing was premeditated, with Khashoggi being suffocated immediately after entering the consulate and his body dismembered.

Bin Salman has told President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, to whom he is close, that low-level officials who had gone rogue had killed Khashoggi.
WASHINGTON, Nov 1 - Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Thursday it would be a "handful more weeks" before the United States had enough evidence to impose sanctions in response to the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. That's according to the official statement from Istanbul's chief prosecutor.
Some claimed the body was wrapped up in a rug to be transported from the scene, while others said the hit squad carried the dismembered corpse away in several bags. Imagine what would happen if Saudi Arabia were destabilized.
"Officials cautioned that no decision has been made, and Trump has expressed little desire to significantly alter US-Saudi relations, but there is an interest in a full vetting of the potential options", the Post said.
After Saudi Arabia admitted that Khashoggi was killed in its Istanbul consulate, five high-ranking officials were dismissed, including bin Salman's media chief and the deputy head of the Saudi intelligence service.
"If the democracies of the world do not take genuine steps to bring to justice the perpetrators of this brazen, callous act - one that has caused universal outrage among their citizens - what moral authority are they left with?, " she asked.
