Despite pressure from politicians and considerable backlash from fans in the wake of journalist Jamal Khashoggi's murder inside a Saudi Arabian consulate in Turkey, WWE has made a decision to push forward with the event - which will be the second pay-per-view staged in Saudi Arabia this year. On the Raw side of the bracket, Bobby Lashley (John Cena's replacement) will face Intercontinental champion Seth Rollins, with the victor taking on either Kurt Angle or Dolph Ziggler.
"WWE has operated in the Middle East for almost 20 years and has developed a sizable and dedicated fan base".
Mr Khashoggi, a Saudi government critic who lived in the United States, was killed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 2 October.
"Similar to other USA -based companies who plan to continue operations in Saudi Arabia", the WWE said, "the Company has chose to uphold its contractual obligations to the General Sports Authority and stage the event".
Jamal Khashoggi's son leaves Saudi Arabia
Al-Jubeir said 18 suspects in Khashoggi's death would be tried in Saudi Arabia , rejecting Turkey's demand for them to be extradited.
Hulk Hogan told the Orlando Sentinel last week he was traveling with WWE to Saudi Arabia, too. "And I also want to say once again, thank all of you for allowing me to be part of something so special", he had said. "Full year 2018 guidance is predicated on the staging of the Riyadh event as scheduled". "It's just going to keep growing the relationship with the Saudi WWE Universe is just going to get to be as big as possible - I don't see a limit to be honest".
"After a three-year suspension, Hulk Hogan has been reinstated into the WWE Hall of Fame".
Videos featuring Kurt Angle, Seth Rollins, and Dean Ambrose were released where they spoke about the enthusiastic Saudi Arabian fanbase, how important the deal with KSA is, and how exciting the WWE World Cup Tournament is going to be at WWE Crown Jewel.
On a serious note, obviously The New Day will have their match to regain the SmackDown Tag Team Championships from The Bar at Crown Jewel. He appeared in WWE's "Greatest Royal Rumble" earlier this year in Saudi Arabia, defeating Triple H in the show's opening match.
WWE Crown Jewel is just the beginning of WWE's 10-year partnership with the controversial Kingdom.
