Meyer is expected to formally announce he is stepping down at a press conference at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
It's hard to imagine him leaving Ohio State without ever coaching even one game as the full-time head coach.
Translating that coachspeak, that means Meyer will take some time away from coaching, Ohio State is in great hands with Ryan Day taking over as the head coach, and in a year or two, if his health is improved, he'd return to coaching.
(The biggest difference between Meyer at Ohio State and Meyer at Florida is Ohio State's biggest rival, Michigan, was never able to beat him, whereas in the SEC Saban vanquished Meyer).
Meyer guided Ohio State to the national championship in 2014 after doing so at Florida in 2006 and 2008.
"I didn't know much about him at first, but he was really open with me and my family and was up front about the program and what we would be getting into", Wilson said earlier this season. He fired assistant coach Zack Smith in the summer of 2018 when Smith's ex-wife filed a protective order after years of domestic abuse.
It's not the first time that Meyer's health has had an impact on his coaching career.
A big part of being a college coach is recruiting, and Day has shown he is willing to go far and wide to find prospects. Turning a blind eye cemented Meyer as one of the college football coaches with bad reputations.
Meyer might be retiring so he can distance himself from one of the recent big scandals in college football.
In his seven seasons, the Buckeyes had remarkable success, winning at least 11 games each season.
Meyer, who had a "core values" banner in the locker room demanding his players treat women with respect, apologized to Ohio State fans following word that he would be suspended.
Meyer's health issues could be one of the reasons for his retirement.
Meyer played collegiately at Cincinnati, spent two years as an unpaid graduate assistant at Ohio State, and worked 13 seasons as a salaried assistant at Illinois State, Colorado State, and Notre Dame.
Should Ohio State have done a national search?
But the loss to Purdue weighed heavily and Ohio State finished No. 6 in the playoff rankings.
Day was becoming a hot name in coaching circles and his ability to step in and guide the Buckeyes during Meyer's suspension demonstrated his ability as an up-and-coming coach. He also won two national titles as head coach of the Florida Gators from 2005 to 2010. Meyer has about $38 million left on his contract. Seven years was the longest he lasted at any of the four schools where he coached, following two seasons as Bowling Green, two at Utah and six at Florida.
