According to Marc Stein of the New York Times, the National Basketball Association is investigating Cleveland's move to essentially free McCaw from restricted free agent purgatory with Golden State only to cut him right after, something that isn't expected to hold up his signing with Toronto. McCaw was a restricted free agent with the Warriors.
The Warriors held McCaw's rights as a restricted free agent, then elected not to match the two-year, $6 million offer sheet he signed December 28 with the Cavaliers - with the potential luxury-tax ramifications among the many factors in their thinking.
The Raptors aren't involved in the investigation.
McCaw cleared waivers on Wednesday afternoon, sources said.
Six flu deaths in the state and number is expected to rise
That, he added, will not happen again. "We don't want anybody going through what we had to go through this past month". We start off with one and gradually when you get into the new year, you often see a different strain taking over.
The Cavs recently signed McCaw to a two-year, $6 million offer sheet.
McCaw averaged 4.0 points, 1.4 assists and 1.4 rebounds per game on a stacked Warriors team last season before suffering a scary looking injury in March.
If the Cavs and McCaw arranged to waive McCaw before the contract was official, it would be a violation of league rules and could result in some dire consequences.Namely, the Cavs could be fined and be lose their first-round pick. Under the terms of the deal, McCaw will make the minimum salary (less than he would have made had he stayed with Golden State). While the Cavaliers followed all the rules, and can argue McCaw played poorly in what they viewed as an audition before his contract became guaranteed, it wasn't hard to find the circumstances a bit fishy.
It's surely been a whirlwind couple days for McCaw.
