Yesterday the FAA said 737 Max airliners would not be allowed to fly until new software had been "tested, approved and installed", a process likely to last until May, according to USA politicians briefed on the situation.
Boeing investors lost $26.6 billion in the first two trading days this week following the deadly crash of one of its popular 737 Max 8 jets in Ethiopia.
Flightradar24 reported on Wednesday that the United States and Canada remain the only countries to have the Boeing 737 MAX 8 operating in their airspace.
The widening action against the aircraft has put pressure on Boeing - the world's biggest plane manufacturer - to prove the 737 MAX is safe, and the company has said it is rolling out flight software updates by April that could address issues with a faulty sensor. It was reportedly created to be a safety feature, to compensate for stalling that was occurring due to how the engines were fitted to the Boeing 737 Max wings.
The FAA then said that the jets might stay ground for "months" while admitted that the series apparently has a software problem that poses a risk to flight safety.
Air Canada's flight attendants union, which is part of CUPE, welcomed Garneau's decision in a statement Wednesday.
On Tuesday, the Dallas Morning News reported that several months before the Ethiopian Airlines crash, pilots had "repeatedly voiced safety concerns" about the Max 8 to US authorities. He previously worked with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.

"For a week or two, it will be bedlam and chaos", said Marvin Ryder, an assistant professor of marketing at McMaster University.
"There are lots of reasons why aircraft can run into difficulty", Garneau said. He said pilots have been given additional training and flight procedures on what they have to do if a similar situation occured.
The 737 Max is Boeing's largest contributor of product revenue and earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT), according to Goldman Sachs Group Inc. analyst Noah Poponak.
Lesosky later sent out a message clarifying that Monday's bulletin wasn't meant to "trivialize concerns" but to provide background information and inform members of their rights.
The safety notice restricts the 737 Max 8 or Max 9 from operating in or flying over Canada, effective immediately, Transport Minister Marc Garneau said Wednesday in Ottawa. A total of 18 Canadians were killed in the latest crash.
Garneau said satellite tracking data received overnight suggests possible "similarities" between the Ethiopian Airlines and Lion Air crashes.
"He (Trump) did the right thing by grounding this fleet, both for air travellers and aviation workers", John Samuelsen, global president of the Transport Workers Union of America.
