Eight-times champion Tiger Woods has withdrawn from this week's Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill in Orlando due to a neck strain, the former world number one said on Monday.

This withdrawal is unexpected and the first injury blip we've seen from Woods since he returned to regularly playing the PGA Tour at the beginning of 2018.

Hadwin's spot in the restricted field event was never in doubt as members of the last Presidents Cup team automatically qualify.

Tiger Woods waits to tee off on the South Course during the final round of the the 2019 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course on January 27, 2019 in San Diego, California.

"I'd like to send my regrets to the Palmer family and the Orlando fans", Woods posted. "Its connection to Arnold makes it one of my favorite tournaments and I'm disappointed to miss it".

Woods has played three times this year, with his best finish a tie for 10th in Mexico City. The 14-time major victor finished tied for 10th at the 2019 World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship on February 24 in Mexico City. Since then, Woods has been among the stars who promised to keep supporting the tournament in honor of Palmer. Cold temperatures and weather delays at the Genesis Open in California made for a long week, with Woods and many others forced to play almost 54 holes on the weekend.

Woods, 43, is coming off a bounce-back season after years of health problems that included spinal fusion surgery.
